While at first I was neglecting posting for a bit, when I finally came around to write the whole wordpress business fell apart and I’ve spent the better part of a week trying to get things going again (or that is to say, Tony got it working again).
I am currently sitting on a bench in front of Pond’s Lodge, Island Park, Idaho. It’s a beautiful day out, sunny and warm but dry and lacking all that mucky humidity that I known all too well. The only downside to the lack of moisture in the air is that as soon as the sun disappears the temperature drops; last night it sunk below 8 degrees by midnight.
We drove through Teton National Park as well as Yellowstone to get here from Denver, Colorado. The landscapes are really nice: huge mountains reminiscent of British Columbia and vast fiels spotted with wildlife. Since I was the one who had to twist arms to get us to drive slightly out of the way on our 12 hour journey so that we could see these beautiful sights, I also got to drive (which half defeats the purpose), which got a little interesting as the sun set. After nightfall drowned the remaining light I was continuously brought to a stop by fleeting shadows traversing our path, never more than a few hundred feet ahead. The best moment occurred as we came down a hill and noticed all the cars in the oncoming lane stopped, their lights, while practically blinding, outlining an enormous silhouette. As we slowly approached, the huge gangly monster trotted towards us. Luckily the creature was in a calm mood, mostly likely out for an evening stroll down Yellowstone Blvd, and didn’t take offense to our blocking its path. As it changed lanes and made its way around our van, the bison, practically as tall as the van and two-thirds it’s length, sauntered by our awe-struck faces. Of course, no one got a picture.
Speaking of photography, more pics should be up on the flickr page soon.
