Assured through experience

Posted June 22nd, 2006

I have had many dreams in which I found myself in an area I know to exist in reality.
Hang on to your opinions about ‘existence’ and ‘reality’ for now.
In these dreams I have experienced a wide spectrum of possibilities that otherwise have not existed in reality. Dreams that took place on my very street, in front of my house.
Only…
It wasn’t my house, or
It wasn’t my car in the driveway, or
It wasn’t my neighbour’s house, or
It was my house as in it was my home, but of a different make and model.
or
I was being chased by wolves, or
There was a huge street party, or
Just as the world came to an end I was scooped up by a flying saucer and retracted into space as I watched the ground beneath me fall away.

These things do not exist anywhere other than in my mind, it would at first appear; however, no more do any other thoughts of my house, my street, wolves and parties, which are instantiated by real events in reality. It seems then that regardless of from where any ideas about the outside world, or within for that matter, have originated, they are all dealt with on the same plane and arguably have equal significance in influencing my present subjectivity to the reality which I am experiencing.

Is language stopped short of perfection by the same faculty which allows it to exist in the first place?

Our abilities of recollection, understanding and creativity allow language to exist.
Were the individual incapable of memorizing or at least recollecting, that is, re-cognizing the complex symbols we have appropriated as signs and the significance to which we have bound them, it would be impossible to convey an idea.

First perhaps, the speaker could explain or teach the audience the symbols and syntax he or she intended to use in order to convey their particular idea, but that would require that the audience be capable or remembering these rules and relations.
If a subject did have a memory but lacked the ability to understand any particular syntax, they could perhaps learn what certain long lines of symbols meant, but it seems doubtful that such an individual could produce novel phrases of their own.
Restricting the creativity of someone who can recall the alphabet and understands proper grammar might also constrain their ability to compose new sentences and would certainly limit them from breaking strict syntactical boundaries.

These faculties of the mind, memory and recollection, understanding and creativity not only provide us with the potential for a universal language by which everyone can communicate, they also sustain leaks which are the foundations for the greatest instances of ambiguity and equivocation which seemingly reap language of any integrity or absoluteness.

More on this after some sleep…

To give away my conclusion:
With all the deliberation I may have taken in formulating the above and the current context, with or without the use of brackets (mind you), is in no way knowingly more or less precisely conveyed to your mind, through language, from mine, than had I deliberated any more or less with the words I have chosen. Nothing I just said makes any sense beyond our recognizing through concordance and reference in the future that anything I did convey today did make any sense. Moreover, the agreement we have in the future about having understood what it is that I am talking abaoout will be based on

i) Our memory of this past experience (which is certainly fallible)
ii) Our accordance at that present time, which too will be conveyed through the imperfections of our only idiom of communication: language

For those of you living in the stoneage (that is, still using Internet Explorer), I seem to have fixed the coding issue and the formatting is back to normal. Oh how important closing tags are! “>”

And that’s all that’s new with me!

….just kidding….

I went for drinks with some friends this evening rather than bogging with the usual crowd and it was a fun time. Though I knew 3 of the 6, it was still nice to be around different company, different thoughts, different perspectives. The slightly altered atmosphere and different minds also brought out new action I had never before seen in everyone including myself.
It made me want to travel. It made me want to talk!
Though there were certainly still shields up, I felt comfortable. As I returned home, I realized once again a small part of the size of this vast . .  .   .    .     .      .       .       .        .         .          .           .            .
